Project renovation and redesign

To bring Spinoza's life and ideas to the attention of a larger and more diverse audience, the Spinoza House Museum is carrying out a major renovation operation.

Spinoza House Museum is Being Renovated

The Spinozahuis Society wants to increase the impact and outreach of the museum. A major renovation of the Museum was therefore initiated in 2023.

Spinoza’s Philosophy is Alive and Kicking!

The planned renovation bridges the gap between Spinoza’s seventeenth-century ideas and current social issues such as the democratic constitutional state, the role of government and disinformation versus facts from scientific research. Each and every one of these topics is important to every citizen.

The new museum design appeals to broad groups: pupils, families, students, day trippers, (foreign) tourists and experts.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the seventeenth-century ambiance and feel Spinoza’s presence, including in his reconstructed library. Visitors are inspired to think critically about a form of citizenship in which reason leads to insight, and to consider that learning to understand each other is preferable to proving oneself right.

For younger visitors and school classes, the Spinoza House Museum is further developing its appealing educational program.

Work in Progress

The new, modern, multifunctional reception area will be put into use at the beginning of 2024. Its contemporary design accentuates the authentic character of the monumental Spinoza House. This extension makes it possible to receive groups, show an introductory film and organize special activities, such as a philosophical café and children’s activities.

The garden has been literally and figuratively overhauled and offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy the new exhibition.

The redevelopment of the museum itself is planned for the first half of 2025.
